His application came on the day the Supreme Court granted bail to former telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura, leaving Raja the only accused still in jail.

Raja has applied for bail on grounds that the case against him is “false and fabricated”. He has sought parity with his co-accused, who are all out on bail. The lower court gave the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) until 11 May to respond to the bail application.

Raja was arrested on 2 February 2011 for his role in overseeing the allotment of telecom licences and spectrum in 2008. The… Continue reading

He was charged with conspiracy, cheating, criminal misconduct and abusing an official position in the allocation of 2G spectrum licences which were believed to be rigged.

With this only former A Raja is now languishing in the jail. All other accused including the Raja’s private secretary PK Chandolia and corporate honchos have already been granted bail.

The top court said Behura, who oversaw allocation of the licenses and bandwidth in 2008 as the senior most bureaucrat in the telecom department should provide two sureties of Rs 500,000 each for… Continue reading

A bench of justices GS Singhvi and KS Radhakrishnan upheld the trial court’s order for bail to Chandolia, setting aside a Delhi High Court order, which had stayed grant of bail to him by the trial court suo motu.

The apex court bench had earlier stayed temporarily the high court’s order, which had put on hold the trial court’s order granting bail to Chandolia.

The bench granted bail to Behura stipulating that he would furnish a personal bond of Rs10 lakh and surety of Rs5 lakh.

With the imminent release of Behura after grant of bail to him, former Telecom Minister… Continue reading

Delhi High Court issues notice to CBI on 2G accused’s plea

New Delhi, May 7 — The Delhi High Court Monday issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on the plea of DMK Member of Parliament (MP) Kanimozhi’s close aide and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharath Kumar, seeking quashing of charges framed against him in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

Sharath Kumar moved the high court against the order of the special CBI judge that framed charges against him in the 2G spectrum allocation scam.

The CBI had accused Sharath Kumar of taking bribe of Rs.200 crore as “reward for undue favours” shown by former telecom minister A. Raja in the 2G licence allocation to Swan Telecom in connivance of other public servants.

The CBI had also alleged that Sharath Kumar used to look into the day-to-day affairs of Kalaignar TV in which 60 percent stake was held by former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal,… Continue reading
