Ratan Tata seeks report on Radia tapes

Industrialist Ratan Tata on Thursday urged the Supreme Court to direct the central government to provide him the confidential report on the leakage of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia’s taped conversations.
He asked for the report of the probe by the income tax director general so
that he could implead the telecom service providers as necessary parties in the case.
On the plea made by senior counsel Mukul Rohtagi appearing for Tata, an apex court bench headed by Justice GS Singhvi asked additional solicitor general Harin Rawal if he had any reservation in sharing the confidential report with the petitioner.
Rawal told the court that if Tata make an application on this, the central government will indicate the portions of the report on which it will claim privilege.

Radia tapes released by media tampered with, Centre tells SC
New Delhi, January 31: The central government Tuesday told the Supreme Court that the versions published in the media of the controversial conversations of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia did not match the original tapes.

The court was told this in a report given in a sealed cover in the course of the hearing of a petition by industrialist Ratan Tata, who contended that though his phone was not tapped his privacy was violated because his conversations with Radia were recorded.
Going through the report, the apex court bench, headed by Justice G.S. Singhvi, observed that the conversations might have been edited. The report submitted by the union home ministry said there were discrepancies in the length of the tapes and the nature of the conversations. The government also denied that the taped conversations were leaked by any of its agencies.

The court then adjourned the hearing for two weeks to enable the industrialist to make an application for seeking the report.
