Radia tapes: 2nd affidavit soon in response to Tata’s petition

The Government on Tuesday said a second affidavit will soon be filed in response to a petition by industrialist Ratan Tata seeking an independent probe into leakage of tapes containing his conversations with corporate lobbyist Niira Radia.
When asked if there was a discussion on the second affidavit that needs to be filed in the case, Law Minister Salman Khurshid said, “It will be finalised. We are trying to understand what reply needs to be filed.”
“Of course, there are inputs that have to come from several sources, now we have discussed it, an affidavit reply will be filed soon,”he added.
Industrialist Ratan Tata had asked the Supreme Court to order a probe by an independent agency into the leakage of his tapped telephonic talk with corporate lobbyist Niira Radia expressing dissatisfaction over the ongoing investigation.

LAST WORD: Sorry, folks. This is not the big bang the market was hoping for. It’s a whimper. As Pranab Mukherjee concludes his speech, it’s clear that there have been no serious efforts to fix anything. Fuel and fertiliser subsidies have not been cut. Fiscal consolidation is a mixed bag. Higher taxes will raise inflation by a bit. This budget won’t achieve much. Your tax reliefs are piddly. Forget the pizza. Order more booze to drown your sorrows.
12.45: Gold buffs – here’s your comeuppance. Basic customs on gold doubled. Also on platinum. Sin taxes also up on some cigarettes and bidis. Small customs cuts on cigarettes, too.

Niira Radia visits Tirumala

TIRUPATI: Lobbyist Niira Radia visited Tirumala on Wednesday to participate in the Sahasra Chandra Darshan Shanti Mahotsavam conducted by Pejavar Mutt seer Vishvesha Theertha Swamy and Sudhamangalotsavams at Kalyanavedika.
She is a follower of the Pejavar Mutt pontiff. When some mediapersons approached her, she refused to speak. She reportedly had darshan of Venkateswara and left later.

At the time of CAG’s “presumably” inaccurate press release relating to the 2g spectrum allocation in 2008, neither did the media take the trouble to understand the nitty gritties of the 2g spectrum policy, nor for its own motives did the opposition.
Most importantly, it was unfortunate that even the government did not clearly & strongly explain the factual truth – that the 2g spectrum license allocation at the 2001 price was actually a government policy decision, and not a scam.
