Zeenews – PM should reply on coalgate charges: CPI
Last Updated: Thursday, May 31, 2012, 22:23
CPI on Thursday demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh reply to charges of irregularities in allocation of coal blocks instead of evading an answer over the issue.
“The Prime Minister asserts he is clean but his responsibility would not go by saying so. He should reply what is his responsibility and that of the PMO,” CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy told reporters here.
“The Prime Minister is trying to evade a reply by saying that he is clean and that his integrity cannot be questioned. PMO had a role in the matter and we demand that he take responsibility for it,” he said. Training his guns on Prime Minister, Reddy wondered why Manmohan Singh remained silent when CPI sought cancellation of licences in the 2G issue in 2008.
“The probe (into 2G scam) was held only after the Supreme Court intervened.… Continue reading

2G case: Court warns lawyers against making irrelevant posers

New Delhi: “Irrelevant questions” posed by a defence counsel to a CBI witness irked a Delhi court yet again on Wednesday during hearing of the 2G spectrum case, prompting it to warn lawyers that it may impose heavy cost on them for wasting its time.
The court’s warning came during the cross-examination of former Telecom Secretary D S Mathur, a key prosecution witness in the case, by defence counsel S P Minocha, who asked him if he had gone through his statement made in the court on April 9 before signing it.
“If such questions are persisted to any further and are ruled to be irrelevant, they shall be subject to heavy cost as this is leading to wastage of time of the court,” Special CBI Judge O P Saini said.
Minocha, who was appearing for former Telecom Secretary and co-accused in the case Siddharth Behura, also asked Mathur whether… Continue reading
2G spectrum allocation: Letters between PM and A Raja not processed by DoT, says DS Mathur
NEW DELHI: Former Telecom Secretary D S Mathur today told a Delhi court that he did not find the Department of Telecom officially processing some key letters on the 2G spectrum allocation issue, exchanged between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and erstwhile Telecom Minister A Raja.
Mathur told Special CBI Judge O P Saini that Raja had received one letter from Prime Minister on November 2, 2007 and had written back two letters to the PM the same day. None of these letters were officially processed by DoT, he said.
“I have been shown two letters, both dated November 2, 2007, written by A Raja… Continue reading
2G scam: Ex-Telecom Secy likely to depose tomorrow
By PTI Apr 08 2012 , New Delhi
Former Telecom Secretary Dinesh Shankar Mathur, a key prosecution witness in the 2G spectrum allocation case, is likely to depose before a Delhi court on Monday.
Mathur’s deposition before Special CBI Judge O P Saini assumes significance as he, in his statement to the CBI, had said it was former Telecom Minister A Raja who had decided to prepone the cut-off date for the receipt of new applications for Unified Access Services Licences (UASL).
Earlier, October 1, 2007 was fixed as the last date for receiving applications, but it was preponed to September 25.
The CBI had alleged that Raja, in collusion with others, had decided to keep September 25, 2007 as the cut-off date for considering the applications for UASL to “wrongly benefit” Unitech Ltd MD Sanjay Chandra and Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod… Continue reading

New Delhi: In a setback for the government, the Supreme Court has dismissed the Centre’s review petition over strictures against officials of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) that was part of its judgement in connection with the 2G case earlier this year. The top court had, in its order, said that the concerned officials should have apprised the Prime Minister on the pendency of an application filed by Janarta Party president Subramanian Swamy seeking sanction for prosecuting A Raja.
Mr Raja has been in jail for over a year now for allegedly masterminding the 2G swindle in 2008. He had allegedly granted sweetheart deals to companies who conspired with him – not only did he give them licenses at throwaway prices, but the spectrum they needed was free.
Dismissing the Centre’s plea for a… Continue reading
SC takes up review petitions in 2G case
The Supreme Court on Tuesday deliberated on a bunch of review petitions filed by various telecom companies, Centre and former telecom minister A Raja seeking review of various aspects of its verdict in the 2G spectrum allocation case.
A bench of justice GS Singhvi and justice KS Radhakrishnan heard the petitions in chamber and any decision on them was not immediately known.
The apex court had passed a slew of judgements in the scam including the order cancelling the 122 2G spectrum licences granted by Raja and held that first-come-first served (FCFS) policy could not be used for allocation of natural resources.
It had also pulled up the Prime Minister’s Office(PMO) for sitting on the complaint filed against Raja and set a time limit of four months for the government to take a decision on granting sanction to prosecute a corrupt public servant.
In the aftermath of… Continue reading
