India’s soap opera on corruption

The arrest of the former Indian telecom minister in the ongoing 2G Spectrum allocation case was considered a major milestone. After several rounds of questioning and raids at his residence, offices and firms in which he was supposed to have had business interests, it appeared that the government was finally dealing firmly with corruption.

Fifteen months later, the genuine efforts of those involved in addressing the multi-billion dollar telecommunications scam has been brought to nought. Raja walked free from jail on bail, after the judge ruled against the slow progress of the trial and the fact that almost all the other accused had been released thus making it pointless to detain Raja.

Raja gets bail in 2G case, out of jail after 15 months

A Raja, former telecom minister and prime accused in the 2G spectrum scam, got bail from a CBI special court on Tuesday and walked out after 15 months in jail.
Raja emerged from the Tihar Jail to slogan-shouting and bursting of crackers by DMK workers. The 49-year-old MP drove to his Motilal

Nehru Marg home in the capital and was ushered in with an aarti amid the beating of drums and distribution of sweets.

 

Raja, who was forced to resign as minister in November 2010, was the first accused to be arrested in the 2G scam — India’s biggest corruption case — and the last one to apply for and get bail. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/5/16_05-pg1c.jpg
